Recipe for Chocolate Drop Brownies, from the back of a Sainsbury’s packet of chocolate drops (41p in 1983):

  • 65g (2.5 oz) butter
  • 175g (6 oz) caster sugar
  • 65g (2.5 oz) self-raising flour sifted with 15g (0.5 oz) cocoa
  • 50g (2 oz) chocolate drops
  • 2 eggs, size 3, beaten
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla essence

    1. Melt butter and stir in sugar.
    2. Beat in remaining ingredients and pour into a greased and lined 20cm (8 inch) square shallow cake tin.
    3. Bake in a preheated oven 180℃, 350℉, gas Mark 4 for 40 minutes until risen an firm.
    4. Leave in tin to cool, then cut into squares.

Makes 16 pieces.
